KIJANI FESTIVAL in KENYA - March 2009
This is a picture of some of the 160 children that took part in the Operaplayhouse MAGIC FLUTE. The Kijani Festival is a charity that aims to raise monies for HIV/AIDS orphans, education and conservation programmes. Our children came from six orphanages from Nairobi to Mombasa.
These children are from the WEMA centre children's choir in Mombasa.
The company - with the wonderful string players from the Guildhall String Ensemble.
Pippa and Karl's international careers have taken them to The Royal Opera House, English National Opera, Welsh National Opera, Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Netherlands Opera, Minnesota Opera, Maggio Musicale Firenze, BBC Proms, Edinburgh Festival, Berlin Philharmonie in addition to festivals and concert halls throughout the world. They have also taken their production of NELSON and EMMA to the Caribbean and to Spain.
In 2006, the BBC screened a documentary about OPERAPLAYHOUSE filmed during the debut tour of the SMALLEST OPERA HOUSE in the WORLD.
Performances are inspired by specific themes and locations - such as castle ruins, quarries, beaches, private gardens, homes - pieces based on the extraordinary and the ordinary. It is this diversity and theatrical inventiveness that inspires the work of OPERAPLAYHOUSE.
